Tata Workers' Union Information

With a global network of union thought management, TWU helps the workers' run better and improves lives.

Tata Workers” Union has always given a stable leadership with continuous guidance, which stands as its major strength. Between 1920 and 2024 there has been 12 presidents, in comparison with the other national trade union organizations. The Tata Workers” Union has always given utmost importance in their collective bargaining.

Tata Workers’ Union has significant achievements in the various fields:-

✅ Tata Workers” Union leaders took active part in the freedom movement since 1928 to 1942 and went to jail several time. One of our Vice Presidents Sardar Treta Singh died in the prison while fasting for the freedom fighters.

✅ The Tata Workers” Union has the membership over 99% employees in Tata Steel. It is the only union recognized by Tata Steel since 1920.

✅ Over the last 103 years Tata Workers” Union (formerly Labour Association, Jamshedpur) has a long way to become a responsible union. The leadership has been matured and consistent.

✅ All financial, social and fringe benefits gained through non-violent and peaceful means. Since 1928 there is no industrial strike in Tata Steel.

✅ Tata Steel Bonus payment is unique, progressively moving from production and productivity to profitability, which is an industry bench mark today. In addition to Performance Bonus, Incentive Bonus schemes were introduced in all production and maintenance departments in 1948. Since 1975, Employees not covered in departmental incentive bonus schemes are covered by plant wide bonus scheme.

✅ In 1962, the Tata Workers” Union spent Lacs of rupees to run two high schools for the education of members children. Later on Government of Bihar took over the charge of these schools.

✅ Since 1954 Tata Workers” Union has introduced a sickness benefit scheme for the benefit of its member in the event of their sickness causing loss of pay.

✅ Sick leave of 30 days on half pay was introduced in 1959 for all employees. In 1965 in addition to Privilege leave and festival leave, casual leave of 5 days was extended to factory workers also.

✅ If a Tata workers” Union member worker retires a token gift is given to the retired member.

✅ In 2002, Tata Steel and Tata Workers’ Union created ‘Tejaswini’, meaning woman who possess Tej the light of power, courage and wisdom. It was a bold decision to reskill and retrain female mazdoors, till then limited to sweeping and cleaning offices and establishments, to become heavy equipment oprators. Tejaswini was to change these women into super achievers.

✅ Each year Tata workers” union organizes a memorial lecture in the name of its fifth President, Michael john in which national and international reputed personality, who has made an important contribution in this sphere, are recognized and a gold medal is rewarded to him.

✅ The Tata workers” union also considers the improvement of workers education and awareness level as one of its responsibilities and keeping this in view Michael John Center is established, which conducts trained and developmental programmes for workers and supervisors. Till now 1112 batches of employees covering about 28000 employees have been covered in such training programmes.

✅ In 2004, Tata Workers’ Union together with Management celebrated 75 years of Glorious Industrial Harmony. The presence of President A P J Abdul kalam on this historic occasion was an inspiration to both Management and the Union to strengthen and sustain their cordial relationship for years to come – a relationship build firmly on mutual cooperation, coordination and understanding.

✅ The Tata workers” union took the lead in forming the Indian National Metalworkers Federation, embracing all the steel and Engineering industry.
