The Guiding Principles of J.R.D. Tata

In response to a letter written by a school teacher Mr K C Bhansali, Kolkata

✅ Nothing worthwhile is ever achieved without deep thought and hard work.

✅ That one must think of oneself and never accept at their face value slogans and catch phrases to which unfortunately our people are too easily susceptible.

✅ That one must forever strive for excellence or even perfection, in any task however small and never be satisfied with the 2nd best.

✅ That no success or achievement in material terms is worthwhile, unless it serves the needs or interest of the Country of its people and is achieved by fair and honest means.

✅ That good human relations not only bring great personal rewards but are essential to the success of any enterprise.

Strong, responsible unions are essential to industrial fair play.   Without them the labour bargain is wholly one-sided.  The parties to the labour contract must be nearly equal in strength if justice is to be worked out, and this means that the workers must be organized and that their organizations must be recognized by employers as a condition precedent to industrial peace.

Mahatma Gandhi Father of the Nation

In a free enterprise community is not just another stake holder in business but in fact the very purpose of its existence.

Sir Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata Founder TATA STEEL

The welfare of the labouring class must be one of the first cares of every employer. Any betterment of their conditions must proceed more from the employers downwards rather than be forced up by demands from below, since labour, contented, well housed, well fed, well brought up and generally well looked after is not only an asset and advntage to the employer, but it also serves to raise the standard of industry and labour in the country. In looking after labour of today, we are also securing a supply of healthy and intelligent labour for the future.

Sir Dorabji Tata

I expect the foreman and supervisory staff or , in other words the representatives of the management of the company to be fair and honest in dealings with the employees. We are going to organise our personnel and industrial relation department as thoroughly as our manufacturing, purchasing and selling and we are going to consider it just as improtant.

Sir Jehangir Ghandy

Of the three main concerns of industrial management, viz. Machine, materials and men, the last one is certainly the most complex, and difficult. Yet, while we have spent enormous amount of money, energy and thought in coping with the first two peoblems, we have done particularly nothing to equip ourselves properly for the highly complex, at least equally important task of dealing with 30,000 to 40000 men.

Sir Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata

Labour can play a very critical role in restructuring of the industry, which can not be done without them. Their considerable knowledge and new skills can be valuable input to the restructuring work. The role of Unions is critical in the establishment of a training culture. Training can not be left to the business alone. The truth has to be brought home that in a more competitive world today, which is dominated by knowledge-intensive technology, the key to economic success is human resources. We should know how to channelize its skill, with a more effective organisation of production system.

Valadi Ganapathy Gopal Seminar, Organised by NIPM October 1992

“They should be a great family living in unity and harmony, not only looking into the material welfare of the labourers but their moral welfare also; capitalists being trustees of the welfare of the labouring classes under them May God grant that, in serving the Tatas, you will also serve India and will realize that you are here for a much higher mission than merely working for an industrial enterprise”.

Mahatma Gandhi Speech to Tata Workers’ Union in 1925

Be sure to lay wide streets planted with shady trees,, every other with quick growing variety. Be sure that there is plenty of space for lawns and gardens. Reserve large areas for football, hockey and park. Earmark areas for Hindu temples, Mohhemadan mosques and Chrisatian churches.

Sir Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata Founder TATA STEEL

The importance of frank and sometimes continuous discussion between people and group is clearly seen in the very example of the splendid relationship established and maintained, year after year, between the Steel Company and the Union at Jamshedpur. Its success an effectiveness is due largely to the continuous dialogue between the Company, its Workers and their Union, which ensures that all matters and decisions of consequences are fully discussed and understood by both sides.

Sir Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata M J Memorial Lecture March 2, 1985

The first and over- riding responsibility of all Trade Unions is to ensure the welfare of its own members. The leaders should be ahead of their members in thinking about their problems. It is their responsibility to point out the further and more far reaching consequences of decisions, which could be regretted later. Despite their strong immediate and popular appeal, The decisions have to be viable and realistic rather than merely being popular. When Union leaders seek popularity by taking decisions , only because they are based on popular sectional demand, they may be betraying the responsibilities of their office. Their principal task must be one of the representation and protection of common interest, to keep the wheels of industry running, and at the same time ensure economic stability, growth and security of its members , and the society at large.

Valadi Ganapathy Gopal International Labour Conference Geneva, June 1993

Achivement is possible only when emotions run ahead of reason.
Culture is the core of any business and Passion is the core of any Company.
Life is not measured by how many breath we take but by the moments we take our breath away.

Mahatma Gandhi Father of the Nation

"We do not claim to be more unselfish, more generous or more philanthropic than other people. But we think we started on sound and straight forward business principles, considering the interests of the shareholders our own, and the health and welfare of the employees the sure foundation of our prosperity.“

Sir Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata Founder TATA STEEL
